After looking into the laundry machines industry and through our research in the features and sustainability aspects, we decided to go for more sustainable approach in our design. We want to put special focus on the use-phase because close to 80% of a product’s environmental impact occurs when it is in operation (Henrik Sundström, head of Sustainability Department at Electrolux).
Following this reasoning, to focus in user behaviour is really important, exploring the relationship between the person and his washer to bring back part of the environmental responsibility to the user. We want the machine to help the user to make the most sustainable decision when it comes to do laundry. As another part of the research, we noticed that every machine’s description (the new and efficient ones) talk about water usage, electricity consumption, thus, money savings but they mention little if anything of ease of repair or the ability to update the system.
It is interesting to think on a business that can be based not only in selling new machines but also to update the existent ones, as a matter of efficiency in material resources. Modularity will be a key factor on addressing this issue.
